So, your ship is pulling into the caldera. Congratulations. You are about to witness one of the most famous views in the world. Seeing the white cube houses clinging to the cliffs from the water is a bucket list moment that few travel experiences can match.

However, Santorini is a unique port. It presents a few challenges that you will not find in other destinations. From tendering in small boats to navigating steep cliffs, the island requires a little planning to ensure you have a stress-free day.

Here is your complete guide to help you navigate the tender process, choose the best excursions, and explore the island of Santorini like a pro.

Getting From the Port to Town

Walking: The Best Option

Free
  • Walk time: 20–30 min (steep climb)
  • A steep, cobbled zigzag path connects the Old Port to Fira. It is possible but not recommended in the heat of the day or if you have mobility issues. The path is shared with donkeys and can be slippery.

Local Bus

€6 each way
  • The cable car is the most comfortable and popular option. It runs continuously and takes just 3–4 minutes to reach Fira. Buy a return ticket as soon as you arrive at the top to avoid queuing later in the day.

Taxi

€15–25 to beaches / Oia €30–40
  • Taxis are based at the rank in Fira square : you must ride the cable car up first. Numbers are limited, so waits can be long during peak season. Ask your restaurant to call a radio taxi for the return.

Getting Around

Taxis Are Scarce in Peak Season

Santorini has a limited number of taxis for a very popular island. During peak season with multiple ships in port, waits at the Fira taxi rank can exceed an hour. Pre-book a private driver or ask your restaurant to call a radio taxi.

Essential Travel Tips

Wear Sensible Shoes

The streets of Fira and Oia are cobblestoned, uneven and often slippery. Leave the flip-flops and heels on the ship. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for enjoying the day.

Allow 90 Minutes to Return to the Ship

The tender ride is 10–15 minutes, but factor in the cable car queue, the walk to the tender pier and potential waiting time for the boat itself. Be at the cable car station at least 90 minutes before your ship's all-aboard time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes : unless sea conditions are extremely rough, ships anchor in the caldera and you must take a small tender boat to the Old Port (Skala). The tender ride takes 10–15 minutes.

Fira, the main town, sits directly above the Old Port at roughly 300 metres above sea level. It takes about 5 minutes by cable car or 20–30 minutes to walk up the steep zigzag path.

It is possible but can feel rushed. If you want to see both properly, book an organised excursion or hire a private driver to maximise your time and guarantee a ride back to the port.

Santorini uses the Euro (€). ATMs are available in Fira, but it is wise to bring some cash : small tavernas and the cable car ticket booth sometimes prefer cash.

Allow at least 90 minutes before the all-aboard time. Account for the cable car queue, the walk down to the tender pier, and waiting time for the tender boat itself.

Ready to Explore Santorini?

Santorini is truly a highlight of any Mediterranean cruise. The caldera views are breathtaking, the food is delicious, and Oia is as stunning in person as it is in every photograph. Go in with a plan, buy that return cable car ticket early, and keep a close eye on the time and you will have an unforgettable day on one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
