Messina is the ferry crossing between Sicily and Calabria, the gateway to the eastern side of the island, and the nearest cruise port to two of Sicily’s greatest attractions. The city itself was almost entirely destroyed by the 1908 earthquake (one of the most powerful in European history) and rebuilt in a grid plan of wide streets; it is functional rather than beautiful, though the Cathedral with its Norman apse and its extraordinary astronomical clock tower is genuinely worth seeing.

Taormina, however, is one of the most beautiful towns in the Mediterranean. Built on a cliff 200 metres above the sea on the eastern Sicilian coast, it contains a Greek theatre from the 3rd century BC with Mount Etna as its backdrop, one of the most photographed views in the world, and one that is every bit as dramatic in person. The theatre hosts summer concerts in its original setting; the town itself, with its corso, its terraced gardens, and its clifftop belvedere views, is an easy 90 minutes to explore.

Mount Etna, 3,403 metres high (re-measured by INGV in 2024) and smoking almost continuously, is 90 minutes from Messina by road. Cable cars from the Rifugio Sapienza base station reach 2,500 metres, and 4×4 vehicles go higher still. The landscape around the summit, black lava fields, crater lakes, and steam vents, is genuinely unlike anything else in the Mediterranean.

Getting From the Port to Town

Walking: The Best Option

Free
  • Walk time: 10 min walk to Messina Cathedral and city centre
  • Messina city centre is walkable from the cruise terminal in 10 minutes. The Cathedral, the Piazza del Duomo, and the famous animated astronomical clock are all close to the port. For Taormina and Etna, the road distances (45 min and 90 min respectively) make walking impractical: taxis, trains, or organised excursions are the right options.

Local Bus

Train to Taormina-Giardini station €4–5; local buses from €1.50
  • Trains run from Messina Centrale station (15 min walk from the terminal or a short taxi) to Taormina-Giardini in around 45 minutes. From the station, a local bus or shared taxi runs up the hill to Taormina (15 min). This is the most economical independent route. For Etna, organised excursions or taxis are more practical than public buses.

Taxi

€5 to €10 to Messina station; €40 to €60 to Taormina return; €80 to €120 for Etna circuit
  • Taxis wait at the cruise terminal. Taormina by taxi with waiting time is around €40 to €60 shared between passengers. For Etna, most taxi drivers offer a circuit to the Rifugio Sapienza cable car base station (90 min from Messina) with waiting time. Agree the total price and duration before setting off.

Things to Do in Messina

Most passengers at Messina head immediately to Taormina: the most popular excursion from any Sicilian port, and with good reason. The Greek theatre with Etna behind it is genuinely as striking as its reputation suggests, and the town is a pleasure to walk. For passengers with more time or more adventurous plans, Etna is an extraordinary landscape.

Messina city itself is worth a quick hour before or after any excursion: the Cathedral and its clock tower, the Piazza del Duomo, and the narrow view of the Strait from the waterfront. The crossing to Calabria by hydrofoil (around 10 km port-to-port, 20 to 30 minutes) is a novelty rather than a destination, but it is there if the spirit moves.

  • Taormina and the Greek Theatre. The ancient theatre at Taormina, built in the 3rd century BC and expanded by the Romans, occupies the most theatrical position of any classical site in the world: the stage backdrop frames Mount Etna across the bay. The theatre is in active use for summer concerts and is well preserved. Entry is €14 (€16 when special exhibitions like the Jago show are running). The town’s main street (Corso Umberto) and the clifftop Giardini della Villa Comunale take another hour to explore.
  • Mount Etna. At 3,403 metres (re-measured 2024), Etna is the highest and most active volcano in Europe and has been erupting continuously for over 500,000 years. The cable car from Rifugio Sapienza (1,900 m) reaches 2,500 metres; from there, authorised 4×4 vehicles and guided treks go higher toward the summit craters. The landscape at altitude, black lava fields, sulphur vents, and snow patches, is unlike anything else in the Mediterranean.
  • Messina Cathedral and Astronomical Clock. The Norman Cathedral of Messina, rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake, has a beautifully proportioned exterior and one of the most extraordinary clock towers in Italy. The animated clock sequence at noon (a 12-minute procession of gilded mechanical figures) is worth seeing. The Cathedral interior is also notable for its Norman apse mosaics and the Treasury.
  • Strait of Messina Viewpoint. The Strait of Messina, 3 km wide at its narrowest point and separating Sicily from Calabria, is clearly visible from the waterfront near the cruise terminal. The currents in the Strait are among the strongest in the Mediterranean and watching the ferries navigate them is a small pleasure. The mythological monsters Scylla and Charybdis were associated with this passage in Homer’s Odyssey.
  • Savoca Village. A small hilltop village 20 km north of Messina, notable for its role in the filming of The Godfather (1972): Bar Vitelli, where Michael Corleone meets Apollonia’s father, still exists and is decorated with film memorabilia. The village also has a catacombs of mummified bodies in the Capuchin convent. A 30-minute drive from Messina and easily combined with a Taormina visit.
Taormina and Etna in one day is too much

Both Taormina and Mount Etna are worthwhile, but combining them in a single port day is ambitious to the point of stressful: the two are 60 km apart and each requires most of a day to experience properly. Taormina is the more accessible and reliably rewarding choice: the Greek theatre, the clifftop views, and the town itself can fill 3 to 4 comfortable hours. Etna requires a full day and good weather. Choose one.

Getting Around

Check the Messina Cathedral clock tower at noon

The Cathedral of Messina has an astronomical clock on the external tower, built in 1933 and claimed to be the largest animated mechanical clock in the world. At noon precisely, a sequence of gilded figures emerge and process: the cockerel crows, the lion roars, the days of the week pass. It takes about 12 minutes. If your ship arrives in the morning, it is worth timing a walk to the Cathedral for the noon sequence.

Essential Travel Tips

The train to Taormina-Giardini is cheaper than a taxi

Trenitalia runs regular trains from Messina Centrale (15 min walk or short taxi from the terminal) to Taormina-Giardini station in about 45 minutes for around €4 to €5. From the station, a local bus (Interbus) or taxi takes 15 minutes up the hill to Taormina. The return train gives you flexibility to stay as long as you like. The station is at sea level: take the bus up rather than the steep walk.

Etna cable car can be closed in bad weather

The Etna cable car from Rifugio Sapienza operates when weather and volcanic activity permit, and closures at short notice are not uncommon. If the cable car is closed on your port day, the Rifugio Sapienza area itself (reachable by road to around 1,900 metres) still offers dramatic views of the lava fields and the summit cone. Check conditions before committing to the full Etna excursion.

The walk from terminal to centre in Messina is one part of the journey, but it is the queue back through the terminal at the end of the day that catches first-timers out. A short packing list of layers, water and shoes you trust on cobbles covers most of what changes through a port day.

Deciding between a shore excursion and independent travel in Messina comes down to two things: how much you trust the local logistics, and how forgiving the return is if something runs late. First-time cruisers usually overestimate the difficulty of independent travel in compact ports and underestimate it in spread-out ones.

On the question of whether excursions are worth the premium in Messina, the price is only half the calculation. Time is the other half, and your onboard spending money tends to stretch further when you control the pace yourself.

Timing a cruise that visits Messina well comes down to two practical levers: when you book (which affects both price and cabin choice) and how your passport sits against the destination’s entry rules. Both are worth checking before you commit to a sailing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Taormina is the safer choice for most port days: it is 45 minutes from Messina, reliably accessible, and the Greek theatre alone justifies the visit. Etna requires 90 minutes each way and a full day to experience properly; the cable car can be closed at short notice due to weather or volcanic activity. Unless you have a particularly long port call and clear weather, Taormina is the better option.

Trenitalia trains from Messina Centrale (15 min walk or short taxi from the terminal) run to Taormina-Giardini in about 45 minutes for around €4 to €5. From the station, Interbus local buses take 15 minutes up the hill to Taormina, or take a shared taxi. Return trains give flexibility over timing: check the timetable before departure and note the last train that allows you to return comfortably before all-aboard.

Entry to the Teatro Antico di Taormina costs around €10 for adults, with concessions available. The ticket also covers the Antiquarium (small museum of finds from the site) adjacent to the theatre. The theatre opens at 9am. Arriving before 10am gives quieter conditions before the main excursion coaches arrive mid-morning.

Not comfortably. The two are 60 km apart and each requires most of a day to experience properly. Attempting both in a single port call means rushing both. Taormina gives a more reliable and relaxed experience on a port day: the theatre, the town, and a lunch in Corso Umberto make a complete and satisfying morning.

The Torre dell’Orologio (Clock Tower) of Messina Cathedral contains one of the largest animated mechanical astronomical clocks in the world, installed in 1933. At noon precisely, a sequence of gilded figures: including a cockerel, a lion, angels, and allegorical representations of the days and seasons: performs a 12-minute sequence. It is a genuine curiosity and worth timing a cathedral visit around if your ship arrives in the morning.

Yes: the Cathedral and clock tower are genuinely interesting, the Piazza del Duomo is pleasant, and the seafront view of the Strait is worth a few minutes. For passengers who want to stay close to the ship, Messina is a reasonable half-day: walk to the Cathedral (10 min), watch the noon clock, explore the pedestrian centre, and have lunch at a local restaurant. It is not Taormina, but it is not nothing.

Cruise ships dock alongside in the central harbour at the port of Messina, with the Cathedral and Piazza del Duomo a 10-minute walk west. Taormina is around 45 minutes south by coach; the lower cable-car station for Mount Etna is approximately 90 minutes.

Messina

Messina is Taormina’s port. That is not a criticism: Taormina is one of the most beautiful towns in the Mediterranean and the Greek theatre with Etna as its backdrop is one of the defining images of the ancient world. For passengers who have been before, Etna offers a completely different kind of day: volcanic, austere, and physically impressive in a way that no amount of archaeology quite matches. Either choice from Messina is a very good day.
