Livorno is not a destination in itself for most cruise passengers : it is a gateway, and a particularly valuable one. From this working Tuscan port you can reach Pisa and its iconic Leaning Tower in under an hour, or travel inland through the rolling Tuscan hills to Florence, one of the greatest cities of the Renaissance. The Uffizi Gallery, Brunelleschi’s Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio, the David : all of it within reach of a single day at sea.

The decision most cruisers face in Livorno is Florence versus Pisa or both. Pisa as a destination is manageable in a few hours; most visitors see the Piazza dei Miracoli (Tower, Cathedral, Baptistery), walk the city centre briefly, eat lunch, and are back on a train within three hours. Florence, however, is genuinely overwhelming in its richness and one day barely scratches the surface. Trying to combine both in a single day means doing neither properly.

This guide covers the train routes in detail, the private transfer option for Florence, what to prioritise at each destination, and how to manage timings for a stress-free return to the ship.

Getting From the Port to Town

Walking: The Best Option

Free (within Livorno)
  • Walk time: 25–30 min walk from cruise terminal to Livorno train station
  • To reach either Florence or Pisa, you need to get to Livorno Centrale station : approximately 25–30 minutes walk from the cruise terminal, or a short taxi ride (€10–€12). Livorno itself is a working port city rather than a tourist destination, though the Venezia Nuova canal quarter and the old Fortezza Nuova are pleasant if you are staying local.

Local Bus

€4–€5 (train to Pisa Centrale); €10–€15 (train to Florence SMN)
  • Regional trains from Livorno Centrale to Pisa Centrale take about 20 minutes and cost roughly €4–€5. From Pisa station, the Leaning Tower is a 20-minute walk or short bus ride. For Florence (Santa Maria Novella station), trains take 80–100 minutes and cost approximately €10–€15 depending on the service. Both routes are well-served with regular departures.

Taxi

€25–€35 to Pisa by taxi; €120–€160 to Florence by private transfer
  • Taxis from the port to Pisa cost approximately €25–€35 one way and take around 30 minutes. A private transfer round trip to Florence for up to 4 passengers typically costs €150–€200 and is very popular as it eliminates the train connection stress. Several operators offer pre-bookable transfers from the cruise terminal directly to Florence sights and back.

Things to Do Without an Excursion

Florence and Pisa are the two headline draws from Livorno, and both are straightforward to reach independently by train from Livorno Centrale station. Florence takes around 1 hour 10–30 minutes depending on the service; Pisa is just 15–16 minutes away. The station is roughly 3km from the cruise terminal : a €12–15 taxi ride or a short hop on the port shuttle or public bus.

Florence genuinely needs a full day to do justice : factor in transit time and you will want at least 5–6 hours on the ground. Pisa can be done comfortably in half a day. If the train feels like more than you want to tackle, Livorno’s own Venezia Nuova canal district is a rewarding stay-local alternative that costs nothing to explore.

  • Uffizi Gallery, Florence. One of the world’s great art museums, holding Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and works by Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael. Standard tickets are €25 (€16 after 4pm); pre-booking via tickets.uffizi.it is essential : walk-up queues can be hours long and timed-entry slots sell out well in advance.
  • Florence Cathedral (Duomo) Complex. The cathedral itself is free to enter, but the dome climb, Giotto’s Campanile, and the Baptistery’s golden mosaics require the Brunelleschi Pass (€30). Book a timed dome-climb slot at tickets.duomo.firenze.it before you travel.
  • Mercato Centrale, Florence. Florence’s 19th-century iron-and-glass food market is the ideal lunch stop : the upstairs food hall (open daily from 10am) serves lampredotto, porchetta, fresh pasta, pizza, and gelato all under one roof with no table service waits. Located near Santa Maria Novella station, convenient at the start or end of your visit.
  • Piazzale Michelangelo & Oltrarno. The hilltop Piazzale Michelangelo delivers the classic panoramic view of Florence’s skyline : free to visit and a 20-minute walk or short bus ride from the centre. The Oltrarno neighbourhood below it is the city’s artisan quarter and a good spot for lunch away from the tourist scrum.
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa. Climbing the 294 steps gives close-up views of the 4-degree lean and a panorama over the Piazza dei Miracoli : tickets are €18, entry is by timed slot only, and children under 8 are not permitted to climb. Book in advance at opapisa.it.
  • Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa. The square that frames the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral (free entry), the Baptistery, and the Camposanto cemetery is completely free to walk around and photograph. It is a 15-minute walk from Pisa Centrale station along a straight, well-signed route.
  • Venezia Nuova Canal District, Livorno. Built by the Medici in the 1600s, Livorno’s ‘Little Venice’ is a grid of navigable canals lined with faded merchants’ palazzos : free to wander and about 15 minutes walk from the port area. A great option if you prefer to stay local.
  • Cacciucco in Livorno. If you are staying local, Livorno’s signature dish is cacciucco : a thick, deeply flavoured fish and shellfish stew served over bread. It is a genuine regional speciality rather than a tourist set-menu, and the harbour-side restaurants near Venezia Nuova are the best place to find it.
Florence: Pre-Book the Uffizi

The Uffizi Gallery is one of the most visited museums in the world and timed-entry tickets (uffizi.it) sell out days to weeks in advance in summer. Standard entry is €25–€30. Without a pre-booked ticket, you will spend your entire Florence afternoon in a queue. Book before you leave the UK; it is the single most important thing you can do for this port call.

Getting Around

Florence Is 90 Minutes Away

The train journey from Livorno to Florence takes 80–100 minutes : longer than many cruisers expect. With transfer time to the station, waiting for the train, and the same journey back, you are losing roughly 3.5 hours of your day in transit. Budget accordingly. Ships calling at Livorno with a 10am–7pm port window give you approximately 5–6 hours in Florence : enough for two or three focused sights, not a leisurely exploration.

Essential Travel Tips

Pisa Is More Than the Tower

Most people photograph the Leaning Tower (entry to climb: €20; book ahead at opapisa.it), but the rest of the Piazza dei Miracoli is genuinely beautiful : the Cathedral (Duomo) is free to enter and architecturally stunning, and the circular Baptistery is one of the finest Romanesque buildings in Italy. Allow two hours on the Piazza, then walk into central Pisa for lunch, which is far cheaper and more authentic than the tourist restaurants immediately beside the Tower.

Last Train Times Are Critical

Always check the last viable train from Florence Santa Maria Novella or Pisa Centrale back to Livorno that gets you to the ship in time. Allow at least 30 minutes extra on top of journey time for delays. Italian regional trains are generally reliable but do run late on occasion. Missing the ship at Livorno means a taxi or private transfer chase to the next port, which can cost several hundred pounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Walk or take a taxi (€10–€12) from the cruise terminal to Livorno Centrale station, then take a regional train to Florence Santa Maria Novella : journey time 80–100 minutes, cost approximately €10–€15 each way. Trains run regularly. Pre-booked private transfers are also popular and cost around €150–€200 return for up to 4 passengers.

Take the train from Livorno Centrale to Pisa Centrale (20 minutes, €4 each way), then either walk the 20 minutes to the Piazza dei Miracoli or take a short bus or taxi. Buy train tickets at station machines or online. The whole journey from ship to Tower is comfortably achievable in under an hour.

It is possible but not recommended unless your ship has a very long port call (12 hours or more). Doing both properly is too rushed. Most cruisers choose one: Florence for art, history, and architecture in depth; Pisa for a more manageable excursion that still delivers an iconic moment. If you have visited Florence before, Pisa plus Lucca (30 km north) makes a wonderful combination.

Yes : tickets to climb the Leaning Tower are timed entry and should be booked ahead at opapisa.it, especially in July and August. Entry to the exterior of the Piazza dei Miracoli is free. The Cathedral (Duomo) entrance is free with any purchased ticket, and the Baptistery is an additional €9. Booking ahead prevents wasted time on the day.

Lucca is a beautifully preserved walled Renaissance city about 30 km north-east of Livorno : closer than Florence and far less crowded. The city walls are intact and you can cycle or walk the full circuit on top of them. It is an excellent choice for cruisers who have already visited Florence or who want a more relaxed Tuscan day. Direct buses run from Livorno.

Ready to Explore Livorno?

Livorno is your key to some of the finest art, architecture, and landscapes in Italy : Florence and Pisa between them represent some of the greatest cultural riches on earth. The logistics are straightforward if you plan ahead: check train times before you dock, book Uffizi and Leaning Tower tickets well in advance, and build in a sensible buffer for the return journey. A little preparation turns this into one of the most memorable days of any Mediterranean cruise.
