Lanzarote is unlike anywhere else in the Canary Islands: a volcanic island where the landscape itself is the main attraction. Timanfaya National Park, covering 51 square kilometres of lava fields formed in eruptions between 1730 and 1736, is one of the most extraordinary geological environments in Europe. The black and red lava fields, the coloured volcanic cones, and the geothermal heat still detectable just below the surface give the place a quality that photographs only partially capture.
The port at Arrecife is a dock facility close to the capital, a functional city with a pleasant waterfront but not the reason most passengers visit Lanzarote. The island’s highlights, Timanfaya, the two Manrique cave complexes at Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes, and the green volcanic lagoon at El Golfo, all require transport of around 30 to 45 minutes from the port. An organised excursion is the simplest option; taxi hire for a small group works equally well.
César Manrique, the Lanzarote-born artist and architect who shaped much of the island’s visual identity from the 1960s onwards, is worth knowing about before you arrive. His aesthetic, integrating art with volcanic landscape and imposing strict controls on building height and signage, explains why Lanzarote looks the way it does. The Jameos del Agua cave complex is his most celebrated work.

Getting From the Port to Town
Walking: The Best Option
Free- Walk time: 10 min walk to Arrecife city centre
- Arrecife city centre is a short walk from the terminal and has a pleasant waterfront, a small castle (Castillo de San Gabriel), and the covered market. However, the island's main draws: Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua, and the Manrique sites: all require transport. Arrecife itself is worth a brief look on the way, but most passengers head out of the city.
Local Bus
About €3 to €5 for main routes- Lanzarote's bus network (ARRECIFE BUS) covers the main towns but does not serve Timanfaya directly and is not well suited to a port day with time constraints. Taxis or excursions are more practical for reaching the key sites.
Taxi
€20 to €30 each way to Timanfaya; €25 to €35 to Jameos del Agua- Taxis are available at the terminal and can be a practical way to reach one main site if you are travelling as a small group. Negotiate a round trip with a waiting time rather than a single fare: most drivers are experienced with cruise passengers and will agree a fixed day rate for a tour of two or three sites.

Things to Do in Lanzarote
Lanzarote’s best experiences are spread across the island, and the most rewarding port days here are those that commit to a route rather than trying to see everything. The classic pairing is Timanfaya in the morning (coach tour through the lava fields, geothermal demonstrations, camel rides near the entrance) and the north coast Manrique caves in the afternoon. Both are around 30 to 45 minutes from the port.
For passengers who prefer to stay closer to Arrecife, the city’s Charco de San Ginés lagoon, the Castillo de San Gabriel, and the seafront are pleasant enough for an hour or two, but Lanzarote’s singular character lives well outside the capital.
- Timanfaya National Park. The volcanic landscape formed by 18th-century eruptions: 300 volcanoes, rivers of solidified lava, and geothermal heat so intense that dry grass ignites within seconds when placed in a crater vent. The Ruta de los Volcanes coach tour through the park is the only way to see the interior and lasts around 40 minutes. Arrival by 10am avoids the busiest period.
- Jameos del Agua. César Manrique’s most celebrated creation: a volcanic lava tube that opens into a seawater cave lagoon. The cave is home to a species of blind albino crab found nowhere else on earth, and Manrique integrated concert halls and gardens into the rock in a way that feels both surprising and entirely natural. One of the most distinctive sites in the Canary Islands.
- Cueva de los Verdes. A 1.part of a 6-kilometre volcanic lava tube system formed by the same eruptions that created the Jameos cave. Guided tours take you through a series of chambers in different coloured light: the walk is easy and the geology is remarkable. About 1 km from Jameos del Agua (a five-minute drive), making a combined visit straightforward.
- El Golfo. A half-collapsed volcanic crater on the west coast holding a lagoon of extraordinary green water, coloured by a single species of algae. The black lava cliffs surrounding it are equally striking. A short stop of 20 to 30 minutes, usually combined with a west coast excursion route.
- Arrecife Waterfront. The capital’s seafront walkway along the Charco de San Ginés lagoon is pleasant for an early morning walk. The 16th-century Castillo de San Gabriel at the end of a small causeway houses a history museum and has good views back over the city. Useful for passengers who want a gentle start before heading to the main sites.
Private vehicles are not permitted to drive through Timanfaya National Park. The only way to see the volcanic landscape from inside the park is on the official Ruta de los Volcanes coach tour, which departs from the park entrance at Islote de Hilario. Entry is included with excursion bookings; independent visitors buy tickets at the gate. The tour lasts about 40 minutes and is well worth it.

Getting Around
The two César Manrique cave sites are about 2 km apart on the north coast and are easily visited together. Jameos del Agua (a lava cave opening into a seawater lagoon, home to blind albino crabs found nowhere else on earth) is the more visually dramatic; Cueva de los Verdes is the longer volcanic tube. Allow 90 minutes total for both.
Essential Travel Tips
The volcanic crater of El Golfo on the west coast holds a salt lake coloured an intense emerald green by algae, contrasting with the black lava cliffs above. It is a 40-minute drive from Arrecife and is often combined with a Timanfaya visit on excursions that loop the west coast. Worth 20 to 30 minutes of your time.
Unlike Las Palmas or Santa Cruz, there is no major attraction within walking distance of Arrecife port. Most passengers need either a ship excursion or a pre-arranged taxi tour. If you arrive without a plan, taxis at the terminal can arrange day tours on the spot, but at a higher price than pre-booked options.
Plan around all-aboard rather than the headline sight, especially in Lanzarote where the journey back to the ship is part of the calculation. A short packing list works in your favour: layers, water, sun protection and shoes that handle the local pavements.
Deciding between a shore excursion and independent travel in Lanzarote comes down to two things: how much you trust the local logistics, and how forgiving the return is if something runs late. First-time cruisers usually overestimate the difficulty of independent travel in compact ports and underestimate it in spread-out ones.
Before booking a Lanzarote excursion, work out what the ship’s price actually buys you: transport, guide, entry, time. If you can replicate most of those yourself, your onboard spending budget keeps its room for a good meal or a souvenir at the end of the day.
Repeat visitors to Lanzarote often time their next cruise around shoulder season; the difference in crowd density and cabin pricing is significant. Visa and passport rules rarely catch UK passengers out here, but the right cabin choice can make the rest of the cruise more comfortable than any single port day.
Frequently Asked Questions
No: ships dock at the Puerto de Arrecife terminal. You walk off the ship onto the quayside.
Yes, but it requires organisation. Taxis at the terminal can arrange a day tour of two or three sites for a small group at a negotiated rate. An organised ship excursion is the simpler choice if you would rather not coordinate transport yourself. There is very little of interest within walking distance of Arrecife port.
Timanfaya is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Europe and absolutely worth prioritising on a Lanzarote port call. The coach tour through the park is the only access, and it is genuinely impressive even for passengers who have been to other volcanic landscapes. Allow a full morning.
César Manrique (1919 to 1992) was a Lanzarote-born artist and architect who created a series of public artworks and visitor sites integrated into the island’s volcanic landscape. He also fought successfully to preserve Lanzarote’s traditional architectural character: no high-rise buildings, white walls, dark-wood windows. His influence is visible across the entire island.
The euro: Lanzarote is a Spanish territory and a Canary Island, meaning it uses the euro but is outside the EU’s customs territory. Card payments are widely accepted at tourist sites.
Not from inside the park: private vehicles are prohibited on the main route. You can walk to the park entrance and see some of the volcanic landscape from the road, but the full Ruta de los Volcanes experience, which takes you into the heart of the lava fields, is only available by the official park bus.
Cruise ships dock at the port of Arrecife, Lanzarote’s capital, on the east coast of the island. The Charco de San Ginés lagoon and the old town are a 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal; Timanfaya National Park is a 35-minute coach ride inland to the south-west.
Lanzarote
Lanzarote is one of the more compelling port days in the Atlantic for passengers who have not been before. The volcanic landscape at Timanfaya is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Europe, and the Manrique cave complexes add a cultural dimension that raises the island well above a simple beach stop. Come with a plan, commit to one or two main sites, and allow a comfortable return window: the island’s distances make timing important.
